This week's music

If there's a theme here, it's something about love, sex, and beauty. You figure it out. If you listen to nothing else, please take a moment to listen to the last track for it sheer awesomeness.

I'm going to commit heresy by admitting that I've never been that big of a Prince fan. While I appreciated much of what he did (particularly when he wrote songs for other people) his stage persona was a complete turn-off. That said, this is a good Prince-infused remix: Late Night Tuff Guy (LNTG) (http://soundcloud.com/late-nite-tuff-guy) redoes "Do I Believe in God?" He keeps the dirty funky sexy that Prince did best but downplays the annoying vocal squealing in favor of melodic guitars and a good beat.

The xx's new album is coming out in September. This is the first single from that album, and it's a heart-achingly beautiful love song. Just listen.

Ce'Cile and Bonde do Role aren't going to win any awards for lyrical sophistication but that's OK. She knows what she wants and delivers in Brazilian style, a rap-sung summertime dance tune. It's a fun blend of native elements and imported hip-hop/dance styles. I also like the variety of people who get featured in the video.

A few years ago French experimental chanteuse Camille (http://www.camille-music.com/) put out a track called "Home is where it hurts". Despite the title it's not about abuse - it's about love. "Home" in the song is herself, her body, her emotions. The first link is her performing the song live in 2008 it's quite a performance. The second link is Solo's dance rhythm-infused remix of the track. It keeps many of the unique elements of the original but adds a dark driving urgency.

Music for Marriage Equality (http://music4marriage.org) has done something awesome. This track, "Same Love," a blues-infused hip-hop rap by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, with sweet sweet guest vocals from Mary Lambert. You can buy this tune and all proceeds will go to the fight for marriage equality in Washington state (http://www.subpop.com/channel/blog/macklemore_and_ryan_lewis_release_new_song_same_love_in_support_of_marriage_equality_in_wa).

It has to be said that rap and hip-hop have not been friendly toward gays or marriage equality. As the rapper says, "If I was gay I would think hip-hop hates me." That makes this autobiographical story poem all the more powerful. If you can listen through this unaffected then I don't know what to say. "A world so hateful some would rather die than be who they are/ And a certificate on paper isn't going to solve it all/ but it's a damned good place to start."
