Deep geek: why is mailman not sending messages?

Attempts to post things to a mailman list are failing in some way I don't understand.

I have had to stop and restart postfix a couple of times this week but I don't think mailman maintains any ongoing connection to it. SMTP is also running on a nonstandard port but again I don't think mailman should care about that.

Mail log:

Jun 17 12:13:01 hovir postfix/pickup[16945]: B4D4B74354: uid=500 from=<wex@hovir.com>
Jun 17 12:13:01 hovir postfix/cleanup[25674]: B4D4B74354: message-id=<20070617161301.B4D4B74354@hovir.com>
Jun 17 12:13:01 hovir postfix/qmgr[19524]: B4D4B74354: from=<wex@hovir.com>, size=430, nrcpt=1 (queue active)
Jun 17 12:13:02 hovir postfix/local[25676]: B4D4B74354: to=<add-list@hovir.com>, relay=local, delay=1, status=sent ("|/var/mailman/mail/wrapper post add-list")

So postfix handed the message off to mailman. If I look in the Web archives for the email list I see the messages. If I look in /var/log/mailman the file 'error' is empty. However, there are failure reports. The file 'post' contains the lines

Jun 17 12:30:03 2007 (30055) post to add-list from add-list-request@hovir.com, size=1673, 1 failures
Jun 17 12:30:03 2007 (30055) post to add-list from add-list-request@hovir.com, size=1174, 1 failures
Jun 17 12:30:03 2007 (30055) post to add-list from mailman-owner@hovir.com, size=69, 1 failures
Jun 17 12:30:03 2007 (30055) post to add-list from wex@hovir.com, size=272, 16 failures

Likewise SMTP is failing. The file 'smtp' contains
Jun 17 12:31:04 2007 (30060) All recipients refused: (111, 'Connection refused')
Jun 17 12:31:04 2007 (30060) smtp for 16 recips, completed in 0.003 seconds

and 'smtp-failure' contains
Jun 17 12:32:03 2007 (1475) -1 wex@hovir.com (ignore)
(one line for each list member)
