
In the 1980s I joined ACT UP. I've never thought it was a good idea to out someone forcibly, but confronted with a president who would not even say the word "AIDS" I felt it was imperative that people be jolted out of their comfortable sensibilities and be aware that thousands of their countrymen were dying of this wholly preventable, undeserved disease. The shunning and shame of being gay in that decade made a medical issue into a social transformative issue, and clearly the transformation of our society has a long way to go.
