I feel a need to update

...if only to document this week's worth of insanity.

Saturday all plans got crashed by the double hit of Pygment saying "I need all this laundry so I can pack for my trip". Oh. Five or six or so loads later... And the kids both coming up with major school projects that are due which they had conveniently forgotten to tell us about. Normally we could let it slide and work on them during the week, but given the insanity of this week things need to get at least started now.

Sunday more laundry and some alone time with Pygment while the kids were in Sunday school followed by *crashnap* and then Somerville Open Studios. My goal for this year was to see things we don't usually see, so we started on the eastern end this time and went to a bunch of different places that were new to us. Picked up earrings for Pygment and a present for Shaz, saw many of our friends (sorry if we missed you) and a lot of neat new things. L just completely latched on to the 3-D printer to the point where we had to make a return visit in hopes of picking up his design.

We pitched Arisia to a couple folk, including the 3D printer guy. I think it's a crime that Arisia doesn't have a significant Maker presence. I mean, seriously, the whole DIY printing of objects is sci-fi come to life and the Arisia science track has been dull as old coins lately. The other guy is a mask-maker who works at the Garment District, makes robot and fantasy full-face masks and has DVDs of Firefly prominently displayed. Think he's one of us? Just maybe?

Despite the nappage I was still worn out after about 4-5 hours of walking around so we called it a day and went home.

Monday I chaperoned my first ever school field trip. Surprise fact: children are noisy! As I said at one point, I believe the proper group noun for a bunch of 8 year olds is "a cacophony." So I was on overload most of the time, but it wasn't too bad. I had five children to monitor only one of which kept running off. L was remarkably snuggly and affectionate. Nice, but surprising.

Notable moment: As some of you know I prefer not to answer kid questions directly, but rather to ask a question in response. We're over in Meteorites and discussing how some rocks fall to Earth and some do not. Including an impromptu recreation of Galileo's experiment, as I discover that these kids are at the age where they still think heavier things fall faster. One of the girls in the group is going on and I'm continuing to ask questions.

Suddenly she pulls up short and says: "Why do I have to answer all the questions?"

To which I reply: "You don't. I'm just interested in what you think."

The look on her face was PRICELESS. Clearly nobody had ever articulated that concept to her before.

After we got back to the school I begged off and went home for a little bit of quiet before K came home. He had decided that since I was going to be home he should come home on the bus. He was severely put out when he discovered that being home with Daddy didn't mean more play time - it meant mean old Daddy was going to make him do work on his book report!

To his credit he did make adequate progress, finally. We picked up L and I fed them the yummy dinner that Pygment had set to crockpot before she left. Shaz came over and kid-sat so I could go to the orientation for the school K is going to next year.

I'll spare you the details 'cause really nobody cares about my kid's school construction nightmares. The best part is that school starts at 7:35. Which means we're going to have to get him (and us) up and out even earlier next year. FML. At least he can walk to the school, meaning he can leave here around 7:25 instead of having to be on a bus at 7 or 7:10.

This morning, L wakes me up at 2:20 because he's got a sore throat and feels like throwing up. Also, he's running a bit warm. Do we see a pattern here, parents? Oh, and did I mention I was sharing beverage with him at the field trip yesterday? Lovely. Just lovely. I give him some Tylenol and he goes back to sleep. We're off to set the doc at 10 for the rapid strep test. I wonder if they'd be willing to run one for me.

In our next episode, maybe I'll write about how my other kid's school performance is making me homicidal with rage. You see, all the boys get to be Knights and all the girls get to be Damsels.

I don't at the moment have the energy to get Stabby McStabpants at the school, but I really want to...
