It's not even fun being Scrooge anymore

Normally this time of year I'm all cranky about the forced cheer and massive commercial hypocrisy.

But apparently this is the year for making a mockery of that "peace on Earth, goodwill toward men" stuff, too. As the news of yet another mass shooting rolls across my screens I can't even hold onto my grumpy. All I can feel is staggering waves of sadness for the victims and their families, mixed with maybe a smidge of wonder at the men who do such things. Are you even of the same species as I claim to be?

(If anyone has links to good organizations that provide help in the wake of these acts of terror feel free to post them. By default I think I'll be giving to the Red Cross, which I think does pretty good victim's aid work.)

You're better than I. I get "oh, another shooting?" And then get angry that there are so fscking many that they're barely news. (See also washpost on how there was another one ingeorgia today that didn't even get any press because only one of the four people shot died.)

Yep, this is really not a "peace on earth" kind of year. But I think it will get better. Probably not next year, or the year after, but in due time. I am reminded of the quote attributed to Winston Churchill. "You can always count on Americans to do the right thing. After they have tried everything else."
