She's a brainy, loudmouthed, impulsive teenager. Also, Black. I can see how some people might not find that their cuppa but that's on the viewer, not the film, imo.
That said, I disagree with the "sacrifice herself" reading in almost every way. She's the agent of her own destiny, fighting for people she loves. She's protecting her family every bit as much as her brother is. She just uses her brains and unique skills to do it.
