I and some coworkers are going down to New York City next week for a trade show. We're trying to find four hotel rooms for a reasonable amount of money in Manhattan near some form of transport.

The usual source (Orbitz, Kayak) aren't being particularly helpful. Any suggestions?

If you're looking for cheap...

hostelbookers.com probably has the cheapest options.

Just make sure to:
1. Look only in the "private" column if you want private rooms. "Ensuite" if you want rooms with their own bathrooms.

2. Switch the price to USD, because it defaults to Euros.

But they do cover New York, and do have places in New York that definitely cost less than typical hotels.

try looking at these

Chelsea Star Hotel (http://www.starhotelny.com/)
Madison Hotel (http://www.madison-hotel.com/)
Gershwin Hotel (http://www.gershwinhotel.com/)

These are all fairly close to Penn Station.

Jon and I were fine in the Pod for New Year's. If you and coworkers are looking for a traditional comfy room, it won't do, but if you just need somewhere to sleep and clean up, it's quite efficient. Aimed at a youth culture, but a very hip European one. Almost slick.

NJ is often cheaper and the path or the train can get you in the city quick

The howard johnson's on W. 36th street is the cheapest real hotel I've found in Manhattan -- $100/night. For whatever reason, available from clarion.com not hojo.com. Their website says they don't have rooms, but you might try calling. I suspect the problem isn't that there aren't cheap rooms, but that you're looking a week before you need it.

Note that you're likely better off getting a cheap room in New Jersey and renting a car, because it will likely be cheaper even with car rental + parking in a lot all day.

You could try: http://www.hotellejolie.com/ or http://www.hotellebleu.com/ or http://www.expressbrooklyn.com/

No personal experience with any of them-- good luck.
