Thanks to an assist from [livejournal.com profile] caulay I got the card (ATI Radeon HD 3650 AGP 512MB) plugged in and running. And my sound went away.

Why, you are asking yourself, is a video card taking over my sound? Well apparently the card has some kind of audio output. When I open up the Windows audio panel, it claims to be using "ATI Audio Rear output".

The System Information control panel Components: Sound Device sees two sound devices installed. I just can't figure out how to tell it to use the SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio that it was using before, even though the system knows it's still there.

More frustrating, nothing in the various bits of ATI software seems to give me any control over sound. It's got multiple desktops and other nice visual things, but zilch for sound control.

Funnier and funnier, I tell ya.

Damn. That's a new one on me. I don't know anything about ATI cards, but maybe check the properies/sound setting control panel? Maybe Windows switched over to the cards driver for sound?

Sorry, that's all I got.

I think Windows does have that switch

Open the "Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel (C:\Windows\system32\mmsys.cpl). Go to the Audio tab, and the first control I have selects the sound playback default device. Actually, this entire tab is all about selecting which audio device to use.

Of course, this is in Windows XP professional, so other versions of Windows may alter that.
