(I'm writing this in here because I can't remember whom I have and haven't told. No one should feel left out or anything. I'm also practicing for eventually storytelling this; feedback welcome.)

As some of you know I broke a tooth a couple weeks back. On a potato chip - go figure. Backmost right bottom molar. Turns out some serious rot had developed underneath the old filling, which had been put in when I was a teen. Plus I grind my teeth in my sleep, leading to cracked enamel. Lovely.

So last Wednesday it's root canal time. First one of these for me so of course I get the assortment of horror stories from friends and coworkers to make me feel better about my impending pain. The endodontist is very good, at least compared to other people who've had me upside down with their fingers in my mouth. (Commentary about my sex life is hereby elided.) Still, the procedure took over 1.5 hours and it's still not done.

Y'see, the normal molar tooth has three to five roots. Mine had two roots. The normal length for a root is 15-20mm. Twenty-one or 22 millimeters is considered long. This tooth's roots were 22 and 27 millimeters long. For the metric-challenged, that's a bit above 1". Now, for laughs, get a ruler and hold it up alongside your face, just to figure out how deep an inch into your jaw is. Cringing is optional, but appreciated. The endo said he'd never seen a root that long, and he had to take two X rays just to be sure he wasn't actually mistaken about it.

So there, enshrined in black and white, is evidence of the fact that I am indeed a mutant.
