Music some might like
Jul. 15th, 2009 10:00 amI've been listening to Lady Soveriegn tracks off and on for a couple months and I want to like her music more. She just hasn't produced anything that really knocked me off my seat. This remix is good, but overall she comes across as too young and trying too hard. Compare and contrast with DJ Rap (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUMUht4Rt-4) who's been at this for nigh on 20 years and who's got a much wider repertoire and is just more comfortable with her own sound. (That video is horrible and overproduced - there's a cute interview with her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-DeK9fiPlg)

I like the beat - this is one of those you can really drive to. The lyrics are a lame collection, though. You really don't improve your lyricism by throwing in a lot of f bombs (unless maybe you're Samuel L. Jackson). The fact that the group's name includes "shit" pretty much guarantees they won't get a lot of airplay and will turn some folk off before listening.
Finally, MizA and I were sampling some current French pop this week and I came across this site: http://users.skynet.be/fa080271/music.htm
It's slow to load, but worth the wait. The "Listen" links will connect you to some MP3s for sampling. Again, not everyone's going to like French pop. I think I'd like it more if I knew the language better. Personne Ne Bouge, for example, contains a couple of puns/bits of language play I did catch and that made me think there was a lot I was missing.
