"The Very Best" is a new collaboration mixing three of my favorite things - African rhythms and styles (Esau Mwamwaya is a singer from Malawi), dance/electronic atmosphere (Radioclit are moderately well-known European DJs and producers), and unashamed funk influences. The production values here are very good, as Mwamwaya's vocals are not as strong as some African singers but he still shines on most of these tracks.

Bodega Girls (http://www.myspace.com/bodegagirls) aren't from a bodega (they're from Boston) and they're not girls (well, one of them is). So I've got nothing to add on the name front. Musically, though, they're very tight, doing pretty standard rock tunes but with very obvious Motown leanings. Looking at their MySpace page list of influences it's pretty obvious why. The second track, "She's Into Black Guys", is a pretty direct homage to the (mostly black) musical performers who have influenced their sound.

I found this one through Mashuptown, whose output is mostly meh but occasionally contains gems like this. The track you want is "Down With All the Sober Freaks" which is the top link/video on the page as I write this. It's one of those "should not work but does" mashes using a very strong base of Disturbed's "Down with the Sickness" - which I love. How this is made to work against Missy Elliot, Kanye West, and Pink is... wow. This is a winner and I need to check out more of Ben Stiller's (http://www.youtube.com/user/BenStilller) output.
Now a couple of new-old favorites:

I'm a long-ago INXS fan. Michael Hutchence really was the soul of that group, and I've not listened to them much since he died. Once in a while they pop up in remixes like this one, and it's a bit of a nostalgia trip. I've been playing this off and on for several days and find myself bopping in my chair every time. I like the way Jon Gill (http://www.myspace.com/djjongill) speeds up the BPM but keeps the sultry sexy of Hutchence's voice.

The Prodigy is one of those hit-or-miss bands in my view. When they're good, they really rock out, but when they're not good they approach unlistenable. The original "Invaders Must Die" track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTw2YvutJRA) is pretty amped up to start with. What makes this mix interesting is that it has been amped DOWN, giving everything a kind of muted fuzz effect. Kind of interesting.
Booty Blog has its Top 10 for October out. I'll try to cover those next time.
