All around my music

Wren13 pointed out that one of the founders of Steeleye Span died on Dec 24th. One of the best presents I've ever gotten was front-row tickets to see them live at the S'ville Theater. The first link above is to a recent live recording of them doing Gaudete. Sadly, the sound quality is awful; you can listen to the second one to hear the original (scratchy) vinyl version if you prefer. They'll always be singing clearly in my mind.

Clivester has been extremely prolific the past couple weeks. He's posted five mixes on Mashup Industries since the 20th. Unfortunately he's working in space I'm not all that fond of, drawing from New Order, Depeche Mode, George Michael. Almost all of the mixes left me feeling "meh" because I expect so much better of him. This one, "New Bad Boy In Town", also has some of that neuro/new wave feel but it's coming from Jadyn Maria's "Good Girls Like Bad Boys" which gives it a little more earthy feel. The original has some pretty iffy electronica bits that have been stripped out for this remix. Instead Clivester mixes against Morcheeba "Blue Chair" which is much more soul-like, as is the resulting mix.

Just when I was complaining to MizA about the disappointing set of remixes in front of me, Audioporn came to my rescue with a posting of this DJ Earworm "United State of Pop 2009" remix. Earworm takes Billboard's top 25 most popular songs of the past year and does a SUPERB job of mixing them up. Several (Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Flo Rida) have been heavily mixed before and are expected, but he also manages to work in The Fray and Kings Of Leon, whom you don't usually hear in remixes.

If you like the track above then definitely check this out. It's a set of 13 remixes featuring many of the same 2009 hits. As with any collection there are ups and downs but I liked this overall.

The Ting Tings didn't make the top 25 on Billboard but they've certainly been present, and remixed, all year long. This stream contains a couple of remixes as well as a couple of original tracks. The popular "That's Not My Name" gets a great dancefloor treatment from DJs LA Riots. This is a track I'd use to start off a set. It moves slowly enough that people aren't immediately slammed but it's familiar and friendly enough to get folk up and moving.

Amanda Blank (http://www.myspace.com/amandablank) is mostly known for the fast-rapping "Make It Take It" though I first heard her doing a cover of "Might Like You Better" - both are on her MySpace page. Here Audioporn gives us a sexy hot duet between Amanda and Yuksek (http://www.myspace.com/yuksek), a French DJ/rapper/producer whom I hadn't heard before. The combo works extremely well in this case.

Finally, something else I don't hear much of anymore - found singing. This track is a mix of nine different sounds recorded in places like Cambodia, Laos, and Burma whose sounds I don't hear very often. Some of it is deliberate ceremonial music like temple bells; other bits are just workers singing to themselves as they get through whatever task they're doing at that moment. The producer is Wax Audio (http://www.waxaudio.com.au/) whose home page contains a whole lot of remixes divided into "Political Mashups", "Pop Mashups", and "Other Stuff".
