Pogo is my default icon, and still my favorite. I read Pogo when I was a child and was sad to the point of crying when I found out Walt Kelly had died and I realized there wouldn't be any more Pogo. There really aren't many sources of gentle irony like Pogo used to be when dealing with politics. And I adore the fractured Christmas carols, which I still drag out to save my sanity at year end. This particular quote was one I originally chose because back in the very long ago I used to be anti-LJ. Then I got dragged in and the enemy was us.
What Would Feynman Do, an icon I narked from somewhere (maybe a commenter in Song's LJ?) Feynman is a person I admire in many ways who did great work in physics obviously but more interestingly did good work in trying to figure out how to teach people things. I found him originally through the Challenger accident investigation panel, which is sort of late in the game but what he did there meant a lot to me. I use this icon for things where I'm feeling professorial or trying to explain things to help me remember that if I can't explain it clearly then I probably don't understand it well enough myself.
DMs don't kill characters. Made for me by a former gamer, based on the T shirt. I use it for my gaming posts or comments, of which there haven't been many lately, but I like the icon too much to remove it.
A short animation from the Monty Python Holy Grail movie. I use this for most of the comments or posts where I'm being humorous or mocking things. Sometimes I wonder if people can tell that I'm being funny, so maybe this is like an LJ emoticon to help people get that I'm not being serious.
VNV, taken from the official VNV Nation band site. My current second-favorite icon. I love the band and think more people should share in the musical goodness. In addition, the VNV acronym stands for Victory, Not Vengeance. I use this icon to remind myself that there are goals beyond the immediate. It's a way of asking "what are we really doing here?" and "how do we get what we really want out of the situation?"
Lord John Whorfin, from the Buckaroo Banzai movie. Probably the best B movie ever, and one of my all-time favorites. I love the character Lithgow plays who is off the wall, schizophrenic, mad and sometimes just plain pissed off. I use this for my "I am angry/aggravated" postings as well as my general "WTF?" icon. Because really if ever there was someone fit to be president of WTFistan, it'd be Whorfin.
Edit: sorry about the messed-up HTML. I think I've got it rendering correctly in all browsers now. If there are still problems let me know.
