Can I manage to post (music)?
Dec. 2nd, 2011 03:58 pmLJ is clearly being DDOSed again. I wonder if I'll have access long enough to make this post or if anyone will have access to read it. Still, I try. Another weekly round-up with no theme and lots of variation. And surprisingly little dance music.

First up, the latest video from Genki Sudo. Apparently Byrne and Eno are now following them so they're clearly hip. The song is OK and as before it's really best to watch the video. Their moves are a bit more subdued than last time, but still fun.
The write-up indicates that this is part of their response to the earthquake and tsunami. I can see some obvious industrial imagery in the video and the dance moves (once I know what to look for) do seem like they're miming earthquake-disruption. I would dearly love to be able to understand the lyrics, which are mostly Japanese but with some English as well.

I am not, normally, a big fan of chick-at-a-piano music. Couer de Pirate gets a three-part win on this one, though. It's a lovely tune and it's live so you can really hear how good she is. The only other thing of hers I've heard was a guest bit she did with Peter Peter. Plus I adore the fact that she's doing it in a tank-top so she can show off her tattoos. Artists who are doing what they love and loving what they do kick it up a level and she really conveys that attitude.

Speaking of unique voices, ComaR, Gaston & Yold have put together a tribute mash-up album to Freddie Mercury. There are ten tracks here, each mashing a Queen song with something else. Mercury's voice is the common thread here as it's cast and re-cast into different contexts. I loved some of Queen's music and hated some of it. Looking back now I'm really sad that we lost such a distinctive voice. That's probably the surest sign of a good tribute - listening to it reminds you how much you miss the artist. (h/t APC where I first saw this)

Azealia Banks is a young (19) rapper from Harlem, Who can sing. I'm not a huge fan of her lyrics here - it's a lot like the currently popular male rap - but I like the video which has close-ups on her mouth often enough you can see just how fast she moves. And like I said, she can sing. One to watch I think.

Mad Mix Mustang's latest is a standard A|B mash, but using The Doors and Roxette. That itself is kind of brilliantly twisted, and Mustang does a good job with it. I haven't listened to Roxette in years and I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed them.

A Place To Bury Strangers (http://www.aplacetoburystrangers.com/) is an odd amalgam of dark electronica, punk, and power thrash. The stream on RCRD LBL gives you a good sense for what I think their sound is, which is kind of like if New Order and Frank Black had a secret love child. SPIN magazine calls them "industrial rock" but I like my description better.

The Very Best is a fun Afro-beat trio. Their sounds are wide-ranging with a large helping of effects, some lazy Caribbean-style raps, and a few fun beach-jam style tunes. This one, "Angonde", gives you a feel for several of those elements and is just all-around fun dance music. Hey, you didn't think I'd do an entire post with no dance music, right?
