Three new items from three names you know, one new voice, and a couple mash-ups just to prove I haven't completely gone over to the other side. I'm saving the turbofunk for next time, though.

NPR has posted a link to excerpts of the recent David Byrne/St. Vincent show. It's a lot of fun and seeing that many horns on stage always improves my mood. You know what Talking Heads tune they're going to cover, though you have to wait 'till the end to get it.

New nerdcore by MC Frontalot. He's doing essentially the same thing he's been doing since I first heard him - rapid-fire geek rap. This is a fun self-referential tune, though it's pretty short at just over 2 minutes.

I confess I had no idea that Pet Shop Boys were still (or again) making music. Like most folk (I imagine) I listened to them when electro was new and they were top-40 material. The new single, "Memory of the Future", is classic Pet Shop Boys, strong electronica over soft vocals. If you liked their old stuff this is probably going to hit you the right way. The first remix by Ulrich Schnauss is a little spacier, a little more ambient, and a lot more instrumental with more muted vocals. The second remix is Stuart Price’s and it plays up the beats, with added synth drums, and stretched time signatures. I like all three takes on the song, maybe favoring Schnauss's version a little more than the other two.

Guilty pleasures time again. I used to like the Kim Carnes "Betty Davis Eyes". So much in fact that I'm able to enjoy this somewhat spacey, somewhat nu-disco remix by newcomers Coma. I am not that impressed by the intro but once it picks up it's a delight. This will be on their first album, which APC says is due out in April. Maybe we'll get another single or two from them to see what else they're capable of.

I've been listening to Bootie Blog's best-of-2012 mash-up collection and found two I wanted to share. The first one is a "Gangname Style" remix but wait, it's brilliant. I promise! Dan Mei has done a fantastic job matching Psy with other tracks, which he weaves in and out. The transition at 2:28 is awesome.

The second one is a classic A|B mash-up, of the sort I normally pass over. But DJ Em-Tee (whom I don't think I've heard before) does a good job of controlling the cuts and pacing to give the mash a new sound. OK, it helps that I am not yet sick of the Jessie J tune. Hope you aren't either.
