You've pretty much nailed the essence of the Cube. It's such an overused MacGuffin that it's stopped having any intrinsic meaning. It's powerful and boring.
I note that there was a split-second shot of the Infinity Gauntlet in the Asgardian Armory. Loki gathering the Infinity Gems would make for a far more interesting movie!
