The October dental saga (part 1)
Oct. 10th, 2011 06:21 pmI broke a tooth Saturday night. Keeping track mostly for my own records.
It's the backmost bottom left molar. The tooth has an old deep filling in it and the dentist and I had discussed a preventive crown at my last regular check-up. He thought it would last the 6 months until my next appt in January. Saturday it broke.
After a bit of frantic at not being able to reach someone on a weekend I saw the dentist this evening. The good news is he doesn't see any infection so a root canal is not likely. The bad news is that the break occurred below the gum line so we're in for a bit of minor gum surgery Thursday. Laser surgery, no less.
He'll also need to take out the old filling and be sure there is no hidden infection. Then it's some kind of reconstruction or a crown. Fortunately it's not painful right now, just sore. The dentist says that the soreness is the (now extra) gum rubbing against the broken tooth edge.
I'm glad it doesn't seem like I have to lose the tooth. That possibility was freaking me out a bit.
