Canon-Azog died before the events of The Hobbit. But I don't think he was ever like the Azog in these movies. The movie Azog is like a concentration of multiple orc chieftains (including the real Azog and his son Bolg, and others) plus more, all into one super-orc. A super-orc occupying a niche and role that I don't think at all matches the Tolkien conception of orcs.
