Legally speaking, assault is the threat coupled with intent and ability to carry out that threat. Actual contact is battery. So if I raise my hand as though to slap you and I'm in a position to do so, I've committed assault even if my hand never comes anywhere near your person.
I do think that rape is a further category and that it deserves special treatment but I'm leaning more toward the A&B framework for describing things like stealthing.
