Think hard about whether you'd rather have crippled ineffectual President Trump or active engaged President Pence in charge between now and 2020. I can't definitively say one would be more damaging than the other. While my heart dearly longs to see Trump scurrying away in the dead of night like the diseased cur he is I fear what would happen in his wake.
Trump still worries me more, but I agree that it's not at all obvious. IMO, Trump is a more *existential* danger to the country -- he is more likely to actually destroy the definition of the US. But he's managed to squander his political capital remarkably efficiently, so that looks significantly less likely than it did four months ago. And I think there's little question than Pence would be a more *effective* President -- he'd probably accomplish much more, and nearly all of it would be Very Bad.
So I agree with the "weirdly optimistic". I'm still terribly worried about it, and we need to keep the pressure up, but a badly politically-wounded Trump is probably the least-bad option for now...
