A poem for this week

Feathered arrows fly
Purposeful geese of autumn
Past my window, south

(Yes, I know it's technically not autumn. Someone should tell that to the birds. According to the Farmer's Almanac and all the signs of nature this is going to be an early and colder winter with above-average snowfall. The geese are going early, the caterpillars are exceptionally fuzzy, and August has been bone dry. Let's see how these heralds compare to climate change. The National Weather Service is predicting a mild and light winter.)

As a life-long New England yankee, I put more stock in the Old Farmer's Almanac than I do in the National Weather Service for seasonal forecasts.

(For the next week's weather, the National Weather Service tends to be more explicit and more accurate.)

Feeling like autumn

I've been feeling autumn in the air since the second week of August. I keep getting surprised when the temperature goes above 80 degrees. Weird.

I recently moved to a window cube (6th floor) and for some reason the geese fly VERY close to the building. As I sit here they tend to zoom by less than 15' from me, at eye level.

Agreed. That's why when I saw the two diverge I went to check the various signs.

horses are shedding early, and profusely. Like the rest of nature, they might have a clue too. But I'm not making any guesses. I'll be prepared to heat my house, or puton sweaters whenever I have to and take everything else as it comes.

How does the relative fuzziness of caterpillars relate?

I'd have to go digging for original sources but it has been one of the catch-signs I've "always known" that if the late-summer caterpillars are fatter and fuzzier than usual, then it portends a harder winter. Like much folk wisdom I could probably reason ex recto about the connection, but in reality it's just something I've heard said.
