Mark Morford writes for SFGate.com. He's a far-left hippy commie San Francisco-living liberal and most of his columns are political. I enjoy reading those for the visceral way he writes, bitter and funny and hip. Sometimes, though, he steps away from the politics and says something interesting and philosophical, like this:

APOD is always a good moment for science-geek me. Sometimes they also have really stunning pictures, like this one:

I wish I could make more of my tax dollars go to work like this.

Huh. Thanks for the pointer to the Mark Morford column; he says something I've felt for a long time ("Refuse to be terrified") much more eloquently, and with the respectful nod to the fact that some respectful wariness is due to the fact that violence and sudden death is out there.

As for APOD, I've set up a macro that rotates selected pictures as my desktop picture. Gorgeous!

I think that one of the most interesting things about 9/11 is that it happened in a city of people who, in general, have made their peace with the fact that Bad Things Happen.

I'm not saying that there's some kind of uebermensch status conferred on those within the five boroughs, but rather that there were a whole bunch of us (I include expats, here) who were wondering why the rest of the US was getting an order of magnitude more fearful than those to whom it actually happened.
