How wordy geeky are you?

So by now you've all likely seen http://www.freerice.com/index.php where you get to guess word definitions and by correct guesses you donate rice to UN Food programs.

Has anyone else noticed that there's a little rating "VOCAB LEVEL" label in the lower right? I think it's tracking the difficulty of words it gives you to define but darned if I can tell what it correlates to. I find some lower-level words hard and some higher-level ones easy. So what's your "vocab level"?

Mine varies around 42-45, mostly 43-44

their FAQ says:
FreeRice automatically adjusts to your level of vocabulary. It starts by giving you words at different levels of difficulty and then, based on how you do, assigns you an approximate starting level. You then determine a more exact level for yourself as you play. When you get a word wrong, you go to an easier level. When you get three words in a row right, you go to a harder level. This one-to-three ratio is best for keeping you at the “outer fringe” of your vocabulary, where learning can take place.

There are 50 levels in all, but it is rare for people to get above level 48.

It does seem like many of the 45+ words are things that were imported into English. MizA pointed out that she can often reason out meanings by knowing word roots.

I got up to 47 on a series of lucky guesses (latin roots, seemed imported from French/Aussie/etc.), but am now back to 45, with occasional forays into 46.

I quibble with some of their definitions, though. "Delineate" does not mean "portray" in my mind (which is why I chose "organize" as the closer option in that set), nor does "variegate" mean "dapple", exactly.

I've gotten numbers as high as 50, but I don't actually know any of the words after 47, I just guess well. :-)

An awful lot of those words look like French (which I've studied) and Latin (which I haven't) to me -- yes, I know the French word for zucchini, but it's not clear to me that this should count towards one's knowledge of English!
