One of those kid moments

Yesterday I had a day off to take care of various kid things. After one such, L and I went to pick up K from school. We arrived a bit early and I suggested we go for a walk in the nearby woods. After realizing I would go with or without him, L put down his Batman comic and came with me.
It's pretty tame woods, but I showed him how moss grows on rocks, and how big rocks break down into smaller ones. We clambered around various tree bits and saw where someone had been using an old log for chopping practice. I showed him how the trees were just starting to form buds, which would become leaves. On the way out I showed him the birds' nests, resting high up in the trees. Since the branches were bare we could see them way up at the tops and once he'd been shown what to look for he found several on his own. He decided they had to be "bald eagle nests" and wouldn't hear otherwise. Since he's learned that bald eagles exist in North America and we're on that continent... QED.
Anyway, he was rather blase' about the whole thing and decided we should end the expedition. I figured it was all lost on him, but at least we got some exercise.
So inside we go, to sit and wait for K to come out. As soon as the boys are out the door, L announces
"Want to see some birds' nests?!"
and ZOOM off they go so L can show off his discovery.
You never know, with kids.
