My Diesel hiatus continues. I'll probably be there next week, as I'll be in recovery from a weekend with my biological family. Cuddles, cocoa, and dinner offers will be cheerfully accepted.

If you paid for a Serenity shirt and haven't arranged pickup, please do so soon. I'm not being diligent in my LJ reading and will likely be less so for the coming week. If you see or write something good, please point me to it.

The following explains why Pygment and I do so well together. It's kind of game-geeky but I'll footnote for civilians...

The other night I commented to Pygment, a bit shamefaced: "I'm a bad person."
"What did you do?" she asked.

I explained that my rogue character had been in a group inside an instance (limited-access dungeon). When the first good loot had dropped nine people rolled Greed and one rolled Need(*), thereby swiping the item. I objected.

The response from the raid leader had been that this had been in the stated (agreed-upon) loot runs for the run. I pointed out that if nine people heard it one way and one did the opposite then it damned well wasn't in the rules.

At that point, rather than trying to work things out, the leader kicked me out of the group.(**)

So I ran around the room, aggro'ed (***) every monster in sight, and wiped the raid. Then I laughed at him.

Now, in an absolute sense, the only asshats were the raid leader and his ninja accomplice. If I'd had a good way to kill just them I would have. However, this injustice triggered my sense of "don't frell with me." Y'see I'm normally a peaceable and forgiving person (stop laughing, you). But if you frell with me, I'm going to frell with you. It's one of the things I identify most strongly with in Crichton - he just wanted to be left alone, but once people decided to mess with him, he had to make sure they didn't do it again.

Anyway, I felt sort of guilty about the collateral damage and thus sheepish. Pygment, my darling other half said "Hmm, I see. But I would have done exactly the same thing."

TWOO WUV!

(*) These are loot options in the game UI. Nothing in the software prevents one from declaring that one "needs" every item, but it's considered a form of theft and socially sanctioned. People who do this are called "ninjas" and that's a bad thing. They often get blacklisted.

(**) the effect of this is to give you a 60-second timer after which you're removed by the system from the instance. Note that window of opportunity, it's important to what happens next.

(***) aggro'ed - made aggressive. Monsters will try to kill you if you get too close. If they can't kill you, or once they've finished killing you, they'll turn on other characters who happen to be in the same area.
