One of the advantages of not posting music for a while is that I can filter through things and hope that real gems turn up. I've got two this time.

Katalyst - "Race Against Time"
This one particularly for [livejournal.com profile] catness. Unfortunately I'm having a hell of a time finding any samples of Katalyst's work I can share with you. So scroll down the page to the stack of listen links and click on the one next to "Race Against Time". It's a terrible short sample but you'll get a hint of the voice that enthralled me. If anyone has better samples I'd love to hear more. The track popped up on Pandora for me and I was blown away. Good gospel-style voice plus jazzy backbeats = win.

K'naan's life story is fascinating (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%27naan). A child of the Somali civil war, fleeing to Harlem and learning English in part by listening to rap albums, and coming from a musical family. His music (http://www.mtv.com/videos/knaan/403218/tia.jhtml#artist=2344547) is political and autobiographical. It's definitely hard-core rap styling which I know is not everyone's cuppa but this guy is good and it's refreshing to hear someone rapping about things other than bitches, bling, and their imagined prowess.

Saving the best for last...
Pandora started off this chain by reminding me I like Goldfrapp, playing her "Ooh La La" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wEzPgXOaHg) which is very much a glam-rock updated track with her soft sexy vocals playing around some basic electronic instruments. Well, as it happens, DJ Clivester is back from a couple of down weeks with a kickin new mash-up called "Say Yes And Fly Away" (http://www.mashup-industries.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=211&Itemid=36) that takes Goldfrapp and mashes it up with someone called Wax Tailor.

Who the heck is this guy? Well, he's French. He lists himself (http://www.waxtailor.com/) as a DJ. His tracks are fronted by a variety of invited guests. And the styles... wow. Rap, French-style lounge, reggae, soul, jazz, funk, and some heavy DJ sampling and scratching. Head to http://www.myspace.com/waxtailor and just let it stream. If it doesn't blow you away at least once I'll be surprised.

This is a bit of trivia that nobody but me is going to care about, but I want to record it anyway.

Last Tuesday I blogged about a DJ Clivester mash-up, called "Only When I Am Alone". It included a sample of a woman's voice saying something about telling stories. I thought at the time she might be Irish. Turns out she's Glaswegian. The line is "It's a story, but that's why I'm here - to tell you stories, so picture the scene..." and it's the last line in the 1996 movie Stella Does Tricks.

Which I found because that same line is sampled by the aforementioned DJ Wax Taylor in his track called "Our Dance" and my Google-fu is good some days.
