The Obligatory post-Arisia Post
Jan. 16th, 2006 11:33 amThere was an Arisia, and it was OK. No blizzard, praise the weather deities.
I had a great Friday night, anchored by a surprise encounter with Incus whose CD, sadly, is not nearly as good as their live show. And flan, omg yummy homemade flan. Plus other good things. Saturday night, not so much. Mostly my own fault, with apologies to those who got caught in the backwash.
Too much to 'splain, must sum up:
+Incus (with bellydancers! And trumpet!)
-tech (what MORON puts green light on said lithe, mostly naked, and decidedly pale-skinned belly dancers? And the sound sucked.)
+panels (the execution thereof and finally getting a poly parenting panel)
-programming (the organization thereof)
+con suite (omg levels of awesome - great space, good food, excellent staff)
+hotel room on 6th floor (walking to 4th for panels/dealers was quite do-able, parties close, elevator rides tolerable)
+con security (generally high clue even under pressure)
-hotel (two hours of nagging to get one rollaway bed and never did get our cube fridge. Impressive set of excuses tho)
+parties
+babysitting
+fast track (here's hoping K copes next year)
+con reg (not just because my friends run it with aplomb and reasonable speed)
+art show (impressive variety of artists, number of offerings)
+people (much less cuddle time this year, but some superlative hugs and even one or two good conversations, rare in con space)
+kids coping better (it's not yet light, but the end of the tunnel is in sight)
Arisia is a con by and for the fans. It's one of the few where nearly everyone I know in this part of the world is involved in some way, even if it's just working a few hours in gopher hole. Over the years, the configuration has changed. New people come in and try new things, some old things get dropped, etc. There's a real sense that if something isn't to your liking then you might just be able to dive in and fix it next time. OK, maybe not the hotel's idiocy, but con negatives in general are amenable to this plan. I have to think seriously about whether I want to do this.
If I didn't mention something it may be because I didn't see it or have a significantly positive or negative opinion on it. Or maybe I just forgot. I blame lack of sleep.
