Music - revisiting old friends
Sep. 4th, 2009 03:08 pmFirst up, the newest mix from DJ Steveboy is up on Groovelectric (http://djsteveboy.com/groovelectric.html). This one is called "Orrery" and it's an attempt to hit the style of prog-house mixing from the late 90s. He does well with it - I've listened to the mix several times and even though he can't resist throwing in a bit from MGMT it still fits within the sound. It's just not the usual new/old funk that I like so much.

Coldcut is a band that I've listened to in the past and been sort of iffy about. I like this one, "Everything is Under Control" in part because it celebrates some of the heavy soul influences that informed early rap.

Ekova is a band that's been on my playlists for several years. I stumbled across this particular clip, which is them doing "Siip Siie" live from about 7 years ago. I don't really know how to describe Ekova's sound. It's like the beautiful bastard child of Iranian/Persian and Celtic parents, with Dierdre Dubois' awesome vocals.

Fever Ray is someone I've heard off and on for the past couple of years as she's appeared on my local 'alternative' station with various singles she released. I hadn't really sat and listened to much of her work at one time though. As with most RCRD_LBL pages you can just click "stream" and get a rich supply of whatever the artist has put up for you to hear. In this case you get not only the anxious intense vocals that I'm used to but several remixes and interpretations of her stuff that range from the "eh" to the "oh THAT's cool."
