taura_g still needs some donations to reach her goal for fundraising for the 3-day breast cancer walk for a cure. hammercock had the idea of asking people to donate $18, a Jewish signifier of "life". Considering the serious effects that breast cancer has in shortening the lives of women and the consequent effects on the lives of the families of those women, it seemed appropriate.

In Jewish mysticism, letters are assigned numerical values. The letters for 'chai' - the Hebrew word for life, add up to 18. So it's common to make donations or gifts of 'life' or $18. Multiples like $36 are also common. If you've seen any of the Biblical numerology stuff, most of it is based on counting numbers using the Hebrew letter-numbering system, which is sometimes called Gematria.
