I just have a better feeling about B. They're calling back (interested in the work) and have 3/3 references. I'll guess that because they're looking for your work, they're more likely to answer the phone near the end, when you're chasing them down (inevitable) to finish punch-list stuff. You can always find a good handyman. Paint, surprisingly for many, is hard to get right. Consequently, a good painter is worth a lot.
