I would be interested in hearing peoples' opinions on this:
http://blogs.reuters.com/felix-salmon/2011/08/25/dont-ignore-tim-cooks-sexuality/

I don't think I have enough information or experience to have a formed opinion myself, yet.

IMHO

The point he makes about gay stereotypes is a valid one. Especially with gay men there is still a very common public opinion that someone who is gay is going to be effeminate and an interior decorator or something.

I also do not think we are yet at a point where it is a non-issue. Coming out in the workplace can still be a very difficult thing and yet so it constantly changing your pronouns. So, to try to ignore that a gay man is now the CEO of a publicly traded company is not really doing anyone any favors.

Personally I am of the opinion that you don't have to be Public about your private life, but also you shouldn't feel like you have to hide it either.

If Cook is out, which apparently he is, I don't see a problem reporting his sexuality. It's not relevant to his job, no, but it helps normalize gay as a part of a "normal" person's personality. He's not conforming to an outdated stereotype, which makes it harder for people to Other him.

Just thinking out loud as I form my own opinion...

Yup. As a woman in technology, I feel a certain need to be a role model for girls to come behind me, and for people who think women can't be in technological fields, and while I understand a need for privacy in one's personal life, I also feel he has a similar responsibility.

My late brother's partner worked at IBM in the 80s and 90s, and paragraph six of the article is at odds with his recollection of his experience there. This is his reply to an email I sent him with a link to the article: "I think IBM was fairly good about my being gay and out. All of the management team treated Rob well; IBM Israel even let him accompany me on a business trip there."
