The first of the TED 2012 talks are going up and I'm choosing to link to the optimistic one, rather than the pessimistic one. Peter Diamandis is chair of the X Prize Foundation and knows a thing or two about big-think optimism.

I heard him on NPR yesterday and liked him. I think (at least in his NPR version) he underestimates the power of corruption, but that's the only flaw I find in his optimism. I agree with him about innovation and a bunch of other things, but I think he underestimates the desire of the people in power to remain in power EVEN if it means ending the world.
