A couple minutes ago my kids just came down and Thing 2 asked "Daddy can we have a spare lock and a paper clip?"

"A what?"

"A lock! Like, you know, you use to close things up."

"And why do you want this?"

"We want to practice."

Whereupon Thing 1 demonstrated that he has figured out how to use a paperclip to pop the tiny lock that came with his diary/journal book. Now they want to practice on something bigger.

They do not understand why I'm laughing so much. I did not start them on this, quite exactly precisely. They've been watching me play Skyrim, which does show old-style lockpicking, but I didn't think they'd take to it.

Also, I don't have any spare spring steel - anyone got a set they're not using?

If you get no responses I can scavenge for spare steel and make some. I can even take them through the whole process. Might as well teach em to fish instead of handing them one :)

Awesome. A few years ago kiddo selected a set of lock picks for his daddy's Yule present. I asked him if he thought that was better than a knife, and he said, "Oh, yes! Much more fun!"

The metal band on an old pair of walkman headphones makes great stock for making your own picks. It got me through high school. :D
Also, on teaching them, I'd give them about 60 seconds on how one might go about it, and then let them loose with a couple of padlocks. They'll learn quickly enough.
Just don't forget to discuss appropriate behaviour with their new found knowledge.

Whuffle informs me that dental tools can be used in a pinch.

It might be time to look up the BBC documentry on "bump keys".

I think think geek has a credit card sized lock pick kit...
