particularly when they give up on satire and just write truth. To wit: "Voters Slowly Realizing Santorum Believes Every Deranged Word That Comes Out Of His Mouth". (h/t John Scalzi for the pointer)
I've long thought Romney would take 7 or 8 of the contests today and that would more or less wrap things up. Gingrich only has a chance in one state, assuming his home state's voters have short memories. If he wins GA he'll stay in through Texas in the hopes that Rick Perry's endorsement will give him that state as well. He's a mean-spirited bastard to the core and if he gets enough delegates he can arm-twist for something at the convention.
Santorum should take Oklahoma and Tennessee. Shockingly to me he also seems to be leading in Wisconsin. Considering the debacle in that state last year and the ongoing recall elections I can categorically state that the primary voters there are not even close to representative of the general electorate. But apparently the loony faction has moved from backing Grinch to Santorum there in enough numbers to keep Romney out of the top spot. That's a surprise.
The big toss-up is supposed to be Ohio but my money is still on Romney to take that one. For one thing, it's close to PA and they remember Santorum all too well. For another, Romney continues to prove that he knows how to do two things well: campaign and attack. His out-spending of his rivals is legendary already and it's almost all negative. He's also doing a fantastic job of morphing himself into whatever the polls say the voters want to see. If Romney only takes 6 today he won't be able to knock out either of his rivals, which is just fine. A surprise win in GA or TN would probably be a knock-out but that's very long odds.
Meawhile, Obama's approval rating has just ticked above 50% for the first time in a long time and the organization machine has just started to kick into gear. I continue to think that Obama's entire campaign strategy should consist of asking Romney questions that Romney doesn't want to answer. "So, Mitt, just how many houses _do_ you own?" "So, Mitt, do you want to disclose how much money you're sheltering offshore in those Cayman Islands bank accounts?" As good as he is at playing offense, Romney is just awful at defense.
