In this case I think I have a personal preference, but I'm interested in others' opinions.

I like the second one, because I like the fade into darkness going on. I feel like it's drawing my eyes back into the picture instead of heading off to the left when you can see more detail.

I like the first one better, because I can see more of the subject... I am known for not being very artsy, though.

There are elements I like better in each. Taken as a whole I'll go with the darker (second) one.
