Centennial Rite
May. 29th, 2013 10:35 amToday is the 100th anniversary of the first public performance of The Rite of Spring, written by Igor Stravinsky, with choreography by the great Vaslav Nijinsky. Famously, this performance caused a near-riot at its Paris premiere because it violated so many musical and artistic conventions the audience had grown to expect.
If I'm honest, I have to say that I like Firebird better than Rite but both are fantastic pieces that changed music forever and expanded my notion of what "classical" music could be.

Date: 2013-05-30 12:33 am (UTC)The Ken Burns documentary Jazz relates an anecdote about Stravinsky who was a jazz enthusiast in general and a fan pf Charlie Parker in particular. At one of Parker's gigs Stravinsky sat at a table close to the bandstand and was so surprised and delighted to hear Bird riff on a theme from The Firebird Suite that he (Stravinsky) spilled his whiskey on himself.
