Friday night we went out to dinner as a family. At the table behind us was a multi-generational family, ranging from very small child up to great-grandma. Child was loud and cranky all evening, but we ignored it.

When the kids were done we let them go outside and play around while the adults finished their meals. As we were paying up the grandmother from the noisy-child table came to us and expounded on how wonderful our kids were. Apparently the unhappy loud child was ill and in some level of pain/discomfort. Outside with her family she complained about having to take her medicine and our kids... just sort of talked her through it.

I'm not entirely clear how - something to do with explaining that THEY have to take medicine too and that medicine will help you feel better. That way that kids communicate with kids somehow when adults can't, even when we might be saying the same words. Whatever, it worked and Grandma-of-girl was so impressed she had to come tell us.

The waiter, who had overheard the exchange, also commented on how well-spoken and well-mannered the kids had been. This is a "family style" restaurant so he's seen quite a few of all ages come through.

I'm pretty convinced that K's calling is working with younger kids. He gets on superbly with them and seems to have way more patience with littles than anyone else his age I've known.

This morning the boys came down and greeted me as they often do. L had a bit of a rough night so I asked if I could beep his nose, which sometimes cheers him up. He agreed so I beeped his nose... and he stuck his tongue out. And left it there. And looked expectantly at me. "Oops!" I said. "I'd better put it back in, or it'll get dried out." So I reached over and beeped his nose again and the tongue went away. L seemed satisfied. I nearly exploded from the cute.

My kids are cute and affectionate and well-mannered and kind to strangers. I think I win.

You win, and they win, and the world wins because there are now more kind, helpful people.
