Holding my nose
Oct. 23rd, 2014 12:14 pmI'm almost certainly going to hold my nose and vote for Coakley for governor. Polls have shown her in a dead heat with the Republican, whom I dislike even more. WBUR's polls show Baker gaining ground with my demographics (white, older male, unenrolled). [deleted erroneous attribution.] Generally, I do not like the way Coakley has used the power of her office.
I wish I could like Baker more. But he seems too cut from the same mold as Scott Brown, playing populist anti-tax notes while still pandering to big moneyed interests. Basically, he smells like weasel to me. And I'm genuinely afraid he'd take his pro-charter stance all the way into attacking schools and teachers. Coakley's no winner on this issue either, but I don't believe she'd be willing to scapegoat teachers the way I think Baker would.

Date: 2014-10-23 05:25 pm (UTC)I regret that I cannot legally cancel out more than a single vote for her, but that is what I can do, and I will at least do that.

Date: 2014-10-23 07:17 pm (UTC)I'm *much* happier with Senator Warren than Senator Coakley, don't you think? Having Brown in there for the temporary term was a blessing in disguise.

Date: 2014-10-23 07:31 pm (UTC)That said, I haven't actually decided if Baker is sufficiently more odious to counterbalance that factor.

Date: 2014-10-23 06:06 pm (UTC)I have other problems with her, such as the Fells Acres case and the Mooninites ... but I'm going to very reluctantly vote for her anyway. I wish Evan Falchuk's campaign had attracted some momentum.

Date: 2014-10-25 01:59 am (UTC)She wasn't my choice in the primary, but even with all the troubling aspects of her past career, she's the only alternative with any likelihood of winning.
If she turns out to be as bad as Governor as many seem to fear, she won't be that hard to bounce, and there's no way she'll be as bad for the state as Baker. I have some hope she'll be better as Gov than as AG.

Date: 2014-10-28 02:07 pm (UTC)I don't know if you've seen it yet, but MA has the nice habit of distributing a pre-election ?pamphlet? - it's like a flimsy newspaper-printed thing - that describes the different questions to be voted on with the pro/con from each side. It's easy to miss this thing as it looks like junk mail.
