First the funny stuff
Mar. 17th, 2015 11:03 amThis morning I failed my idiot check.
Back in the days when I worked tech (mostly theater) we had a tradition. On load-out (clearing the space of all gear, set pieces, equipment, etc.) the crew would report to the chief when they were done. At some point the crew chief would call "Idiot check!" and people would go look around for lost items, forgotten rolls of tape, dropped wrenches, etc. As in "Don't leave that behind, idiot."
At some point this morphed into a call and response where the crew chief would call, "Idiot check!" and everyone on crew would respond "Yo!" with raised hands as though the chief was taking attendance. I've taught this tradition to my family - the boys think it's hilarious - and we do it when we're checking out of hotel rooms.
This morning I needed to be downstairs earlier than usual, checked out of the hotel, for the group walk over to the conference center, sans breakfast. I made it and when I got to the conference center I realize I've left my laptop in the hotel room.
Fortunately I was able to walk back and get the computer - it was still in the room where I'd left it - but you can bet I did another idiot check before I left the room.
Yo!

Date: 2015-03-17 05:34 pm (UTC)My husband's family is so notorious for forgetting things that returning to the house to fetch something essential that was intended to go with them on a trip was called "The First Forgetting." As you can probably guess from the name, this was usually followed by The Second Forgetting. As far as I can tell, as someone not of the family (and my husband's family has always made it terribly clear that I am NOT One Of Them), having names for the episodes of forgetting made it seem like a normal part of the process, instead of a stupid mistake.

Date: 2015-03-17 10:40 pm (UTC)We left my wedding dress in the Westin after Arisia 2011. Totally forgot. Didn't even notice! Might not have EVER noticed, but Andy's company holiday party happened a couple weeks later and I'd promised to wear the wedding dress (which is a green velvet & gold brocade medieval style dress)... and we couldn't find it. That was the point at which we realised where we had left it. Thankfully, one nerve-wracking phone call later, we knew the Westin still had it, we just had to go pick it up. We had left it in the closet in a black garment bag. It's possible we even checked the closet and just didn't see it because it was so dark but I don't really remember checking the closet after we put our coats on for the first round of bringing stuff down to the car. Sigh. We now take everything out of the closet before even starting to bring stuff out of the room, now.
Sadly, my back up outfit for that holiday party include earrings my best friend gave me as a wedding present... which I broke while trying to put a rubber back onto (so they wouldn't fall out). Only managed to find a jeweler we trusted to fix them last year (and they are fine now... some 4 years later, argh).
It was not a great day, but in the end, everything was fine.
