I think that's a lot of the attitude that finally got me to PR. I wanted to be the person who'd done that.

I will have to got find the discussion: but - Robert Anton Wilson in ... I believe the book "reality is what you can get away with" discussed that various "the earth is destroyed by aliens/comets/nuclear war" etc were actually more about the more likely and thus fearful fear: "death of Ego".
that people (some/many) fear losing or damaging their own self definition. This or course leads to homophobia (for one)
peoples minds are endlessly facinating.
