L has to write sentences for homework. Because he doesn't like hand-writing he types them into a Google doc. I review them on my screen once he's done writing them. So we're sitting back-to-back in the computer room and talking to each other, but he writes "Thanks!" using the Google docs comment mechanism.

Apple... tree... plop.

L inquires of K, "Are we going to go outside and play the animal game?"
Me: The animal game?
L: We can be any animal we've seen; I'm a baboon.
Me: Why does the animal game involve lots of Nerf weaponry?
L: I'm an army baboon.
Me: Oh?
L: With a fully auto rocket launcher, a flaming grenade launcher, plastic explosives, spare ammo packs..."
Me: Of course
L: And electrified armor!

(at this point I'm laughing so hard I have to put my head down on my desk. Fortunately, L was quite happy to repeat the list while I wrote it down.)

I'm about ready to throw in the towel on another of my enlightened parenting experiments. It goes something like this:
We cut because we care; if you care to read that's cool, too )

This afternoon we passed a hippy herbal supplements store that billed itself as an "apothecary." The kids said, "Ooh, an apothecary."

Pygment: Do you know what an apothecary is?

Them: Sure! An apothecary is where they make potions!

On the car ride home last night the kids were complaining that their characters in the Guard Up game are apparently cornered and badly outnumbered/outgunned. I tried working them through some possible options for dealing with unequal odds and realized they don't have the background for most of it.

So I gave Thing 1 Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" and I gave Thing 2 "A Book of Five Rings."

At their current ages I don't expect much of it to stick. I had to read Five Rings myself at least half a dozen times before I felt I "got it" around age 23. But you gotta start somewhere, and I'd rather start them with the best.

The weather went from "hey, what's that bright warm thing I haven't seen in a long time?" to "OMG my joints are really not liking this crap could it stop now please?"

L really did poorly this weekend. I can't tell how much is him being actually unwell, how much is him mirroring Mommy's overt illness signals in an effort to get attention, how much is recalcitrance over homework he would rather not have to do, and whatever else. I don't think he's actually random - he just changes his responses so rapidly and fluidly it's hard as heck to tell what he's actually up to.
Saturday plans collapse, I go to a party, and have an interesting conversation with my son )
Sunday everything was supposed to happen. Lots did but not as planned )
