Another set with a variety of sounds/styles related only by the fact that they're open in my browser at home and I've been working from home today. We'll start off with two gentle sounds, remember what punk can do, and then look at two smart rappers with jazz sounds.

Lykke Li (http://www.lykkeli.com/) lends her sweet vocals to this steel-drum infused gentle melody by Deportees (http://www.myspace.com/deporteesmusic). The Deportees are from Sweden and play an indie/pop-influenced folk style with strong vocals and strings, but without the usual guitars that US bands tend to have. The collaboration works very well.

Beach House (http://www.myspace.com/beachhousemusic) are a dreamy-sounding indie act from Baltimore. They're not my typical fare, but I guess I'm in something of a mellow floaty mood and this music is perfect for that.

Rise Against continues a tradition that goes back at least to the 1970s of angry punk rockers giving voice to outrage against social injustices. In this case, "The Ballad of Hollis Brown” (a Bob Dylan cover), is used to illustrate the injustice is the extreme poverty that affects many farmers and families in rural parts of the US. The video was shot in South Dakota and the band's leader, Tim McIlrath, has some unsparing words to go with the video. It's interesting to hear what he has to say, and remember that rock can still bring the message.

Pete Miser came up in a discussion of nerdcore and he's a great example of the style. The first video is his "I'm a Robot" that takes on the idea of what if you were a robot programmed not to know you were a robot but one day you found out?

The second link is to his earlier "It Rains In New York Too" which is more classical 'smart rap' and has a more jazzy laid-back beat/riff to it. You can follow the related links from YouTube to get a lot more of his stuff, all of which shows good linguistic skills and is a lot of fun to listen to.

Once you've kicked your brain into gear, fire up this high-speed "Flyer Antics" from Abdominal. That's the stage name for a guy from Toronto who's been rapping for 10-12 years but just recently crossed my radar (thanks to whoever recommended him). Like Miser, he's fast-talking and intelligent, and very strongly jazz-influenced, with improv horns soloing along with the typical bass beats he raps to.
