Let's pretend that my life didn't blow up (ok, that I didn't blow up my own life) and I could post about my usual things, like music. Nothing really revelatory here, but let's ease back into the pool, shall we?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCgCu9zCOIQ
This thing goes back to 1993 and it is a now-corrected deficiency in my life that I have never heard it before. "La Femme Fetal" is a jazz-heavy rap track that is deeply political. It's jazz-rap about birth control and abortion rights, not to put too fine a point on it. All art is political and some of it (especially hip-hop) takes politics head-on. Good music is timeless, but it's kind of sad how American politics have kept this relevant for 25 years.

I noted A-WA in my review of the 200 songs by women+ list and have been wanting to follow up since. As with the previous track this is political music, with A-WA using Acid Arab's music to make a vocal/video statement against the male-dominated cultures of the Middle East.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&reload=9&v=GINpKSkZawk
I found this because it's adjacent to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's a similar sort of breathy, intimate, yet biting music. "I bled words onto a page for you, and you never knew my name" - ooh, ouch.

https://soundcloud.com/djmayajakobson/netta-toy-mashup-israel-song-eurovision-contest-2018-vs-backstreet-boys-maya-jakobson-mashup
I've been finding Maya Jakobson tracks in my stream now and then, and this is a fun mashup from her. I'm not a big fan of the source material, but Eurovision is kind of all over the top trashy show anyway so it fits.

https://soundcloud.com/sanholobeats/right-here-right-now-feat
San Holo is a name I've been seeing off and on for a while in my new music letters. This is a light, happy track with a slow beat. Nothing too exceptional, but worth watching

I have a surprising number of sets in my open tabs. Usually I listen to a set a couple times to decide if I like it, because every set is going to have better and worse bits. That's true here as well. Not only are the sets quite varied in style but some of them contain a variety of EDM and related modern tracks that I'm sure won't be to everyone's taste. The first person who implements a "skip forward" button for streaming music is likely to make a substantial sum of money. That said, though, these are solid sets from familiar names and well worth your time.

https://soundcloud.com/westwoodrecordings/sets/defunk-stepping-out
Defunk's "Stepping Out" EP is a glitchy, thoroughly modern, interpretation of classic funk and mid-80s hip-hop ideas. For my money, "Fire in her Eyes" is the best for its melodic pieces and rhythmic variations around a common theme. Defunk is still somewhat new on the music scene, having debuted last year. If, like me, you missed his earlier work I recommend going back and picking that up, as well. I love how he drops in little samples of this and that. Some are sufficiently close to original that I can recognize them but I'm sure there are many more I'm missing.

https://soundcloud.com/djroastbeatz/shindig-2016-mix
This is DJ Roast Beatz's actual set from the Shindig weekend. You may recall my adoring the warm-up set that he did. This one is not bad but it is more hip-hop and glitchy than the other set. It's OK, but I think I had my expectation bar set pretty amazingly high by the last set.

https://soundcloud.com/djmayajakobson/sunny-deep-poolparty-maya-jakobson-dj-mix-2016
DJ Maya Jakobson put out her summer pool party set and it's worth a listen. To be honest I don't think of deep house or electro-house as particularly pool party music but maybe that just means I go to the wrong pool parties. (different pool parties?) I'm on my third listen-through and I still haven't picked out a specific favorite from this set. I'm leaning toward the Aretha Franklin remix from Sam Halabi - I'm sure you're all shocked, but I love the way she snaps that "Aye" (I) and the remix supports the vocals quite nicely.

https://soundcloud.com/michamoor/house-sounds-radioshow-may-2016
This is exactly what it says on the label - a set of European house sounds. Micha Moor is from Cologne and this set gives his take on what's hot in the house right now. I like most of what's in this set and I like getting a non-US-centric view of things but I'm unlikely to link many of these sets unless something comes along to set them apart from the standard. On this set my favorite is "Fearless" from Matt Nash, despite the annoying promo in the set. If you want to get it without promo (and with bonus lyrics) go here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eE63jg9Y2A

http://www.djsteveboy.com/voiceofthemoon.html
DJ Steveboy is back with a so-called "drone" mix. I wish he'd pick a better label because drone isn't something I'd normally like listening to, but here we have about an hour and 20 of very relaxing aural wallpaper, mostly prog-house. Because the point of a drone mix is to keep the tempo and sounds similar it's hard to pick out one favorite. In addition, I've learned over the years that Steve mixes the tunes as he builds his sets. He's not just playing one track after another. You can find most of the component tracks on Beatport, but don't be surprised if they sound subtly different there.
drwex: (VNV)
Right, I have these long-form sets around for you. Hopefully they'll ease some of the effects of going back to work. I've only listened to these a couple times and haven't had a chance to pick out favorite tracks. If something you hear really catches your ears leave a note in the comments.

http://www.djsteveboy.com/imminentdark.html
Yes, another DJ Steveboy Groovelectric set. Partly it's that I'm catching up on some of his back work (I'm on his mailing lists but don't listen immediately when new sets come out) and partly it's that he's had some really good work lately. This one, "Imminent Dark" is deep, somewhat tribal, and kind of intense in places. It does feel like the kind of music you'd be playing or dancing to late at night - some noir but with considerably lighter stretches.

https://soundcloud.com/djmayajakobson/back-2-back-party-mix-2015-maya-jakobson-yair-raviv
DJ Maya Jakobson (who I started following after stumbling over her work back in July) put out this screamin' hour-long end-of-year party mix last month in collaboration with fellow Israeli Yair Raviv, whose remix works appear often in the set. I find myself liking almost every track in this set but if you push it, I think Maya's work comes out on top - either the "How Deep Is Your Club" mix or the "I Love Sax" rework she did. I had a link to the DJs from Mars version she's using but that link went dead and now I can't find the track again.

https://soundcloud.com/vicetone/vicetone-end-of-year-mix-2015
Vicetone also did a year-end set mix of their own work and others' work they remixed. Obviously if you don't like Vicetones you'll want to skip this one, but I do and I particularly like how they've worked a variety of styles in. It's all house, with strong electro and techno influences and definitely geared to the kind of thing you'd play at a bouncy party.

https://soundcloud.com/innerstateradio/ummet-ozcan-presents-innerstate-ep-72
Just out a couple days ago is another Ummet Ozcan Innerstate mix. I haven't even done a full second listen-through so I don't have a lot to say except I think he's doing a good job of picking and promoting interesting new artists. Looking at the setlist I recognize fewer than half the names, which is always a good sign for a new year.

https://soundcloud.com/ninja-tune/solid-steel-radio-show-1112016-hour-2-cheeba-moneyshot
Unlikely to be most of my readers' tastes but it's part of mine and my LJ so here I blog it - an hour set from Cheeba & Moneyshot with a lot of great hip-hop, rap, scratch, and funk. Definitely somewhat old-school emphasizing the fast word-slinging and less of the things I don't like in more modern hip-hop.

I don't feel like posting an update because it's too depressing. Soundcloud was down for a bit last week, which caused me to wander over to Bootie Blog and check out some of their monthly listings. Lots of pop stuff, but it's not bad for all that.

Warning: all of these MP3s tend to start playing LOUD. If that's not what you want, tap the volume slider or download and playback through another device. There's also a ZIP file link that gets you all these tracks and the other Bootie Top 10 for June.

http://www.bootiemashup.com/top10/06-2015/lobsterdust--PlayaDoIt_(MontellJordan_x_AlanRipley%26MikeCandys).mp3
Lobsterdust doing what he does, a technically proficient A|B|C mash with Montell Jordan's classic "How We Do It" updated and modernized with a nu-disco feel.

http://www.bootiemashup.com/top10/06-2015/Maya%20Jakobson%20-%20Lean%20On%20Backstreet%20Boys.mp3
Maya Jacobson who goes as DJMaya is an Israeli mash-up DJ, new to me. Here she's got the Major Lazer ft M0 "Lean On" that I mentioned in last week's music post going up against some old Back Street Boys. My biggest complaint is that the track is short and ends abruptly. Seems like more could be done here.

http://www.bootiemashup.com/top10/06-2015/5.%20Alesso%20Vs%20The%20Temper%20Trap%20Vs%20Afrojack%20%26%20Martin%20Garrix%20-%20Turn%20Up%20The%20Sweet%20Heroes%20(Djs%20From%20Mars%20Club%20Bootleg).mp3
DJs from Mars with one of their standard high-energy dance tracks built around Alesso/Tove Lo "Heroes". It's interesting for the number of styles they mix into it. There's still a basic dance feel but it's got a lot of different tempos and sounds going on.

http://www.bootiemashup.com/top10/06-2015/Kill%20mR%20DJ%20-%20Summer%20Nights%20(Avicii%20vs%20Calvin%20Harris%20vs%20Coldplay%20vs%20Bob%20Marley%20vs%20Royal%20Gigolos).mp3
Kill_mR_DJ has a nice summer nostalgia mix of five favorites. It's bouncy and trippy but also a bit on the short side. I know pop songs aren't supposed to be much over 3:30 but who said mash-ups need to fall into that same creative sinkhole?

http://www.bootiemashup.com/top10/06-2015/Pierce%20Fulton%20x%20Walk%20The%20Moon%20-%20Shut%20Up%20And%20Dance%20Kuaga%20(Cream%20%26%20Gary%20W%20Bootleg).mp3
I keep think I'm going to get tired of the "Shut up and Dance" mixes but it's a damned catchy hook. Here Cream & Gary W use a couple of minor supporting tunes to play around with the basic "Dance" elements but it's still largely the track you expect.

http://www.bootiemashup.com/top10/06-2015/(2015)%20Amoraboy%20-%20Charli%20XCX%20vs%20Antares%20-%20Break%20the%20meteorite%20-%20hearthis.at.mp3
Amoraboy, a French bootlegger, gives us what's listed as a simple A|B mash but I think at a minimum he's using versions of these tracks I haven't heard before. The components are Charli XCX's "Break The Rules" that I heard a lot last fall and an old track by Antares called "Ride on a Meteorite" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fA05D5rkHFA I think) but this mash has a level of profanity I didn't hear in either of those source tracks. I'm betting it's someone's remix but I haven't bothered to sort through all the options to figure out which one.
drwex: (pogo)
That plus the fact that I've spent a silly number of hours figuring out what I can and cannot do within the constraints of the new work firewall, which overtly blocks Pandora and Soundcloud. We'll start and end this group with mash-ups and along the way visit a trio of interesting sounds.

http://www.bootiemashup.com/top10/04-2013/WILL%20I%20AM%20vs%20THE%20KNACK%20vs%20FATBOY%20SLIM%20vs%20KNIFE%20PARTY%20-%20Rockafeller%20Scream%20%26%20Sharona%20With%20Lazers%20(Djs%20From%20Mars%20Mashup).mp3

DJs from Mars are back with a fantastically hilarious 4-way that mocks the recent will.i.am/spears pop-club hit. It's still a bit of a rough mix but the concept is brilliant. Time for another fat-ass drop indeed!

http://soundsofnowmusic.com/fenech-soler-reveal-new-track-maiyu/
Fenech Soler are a UK electro-pop quartet that have been locally popular for some time and are starting to get more widely noticed. The first video on this page is for their new "Maiyu" track and it's strong. The mixing and dubbing are somewhat heavy but they work well, combining their standard synth-house stuff with more tribal and complex beats. Compare with the fan footage below, which is a more raw version of their sound - these guys really benefit from the work of whoever is producing them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-mMOlx110o
I think I first bumped into SubSoul on Twitter - they're a UK collective that's promoting local EDM artists so it's kind of hit and miss. This one - Kidnap Kid's remix of Rudimental's (http://www.rudimental.co.uk/) "Waiting All Night". It's a little choppy and a little wub, but it's interesting to compare with the original, which is on their home page at the moment. I think I like the original slightly better, but the two approaches have such very different feels it's hard to compare them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W10F0ezCTIQ
I got hooked on this track immediately because of its interesting and complexly syncopated percussions. Then around 0:50 the vocal starts and I'm like... waitaminnit, I know that voice. Go ahead and listen, I'll wait. Yes, that's Fever Ray, more properly known as Karin Dreijer Andersson, who is half of this Swedish brother-sister duo that record as The Knife. I think the easiest way to put it is that if you like experimental music and/or Fever Ray you'll like this. If you just want to relax to some easy 4/4 stuff then skip this one.

http://soundcloud.com/djmayajakobson/dj-maya-jakobson-when-i-love-you-oughta-know-alanis-vs-david-vs-justin-mashup
Sometimes a mash-up can't help. I'm sorry, people, but Katy Perry just sucks and no attempt to rehabilitate it is going to help. So I approached this mash-up with some skepticism. Can you make something good out of Alanis Moreupset and everyone's favorite Justin, especially by using some standard David Guetta? Well, give it a listen, but Israeli DJ Maya Jakobson gets my two-thumbs-up for pulling off a remix near-miracle. The track captures what's really good about Morissette's angry and hurt lyrics and uses that to drive what turns into a high-bpm dance-floor destroyer.
