drwex: (VNV)
AudioPorn Central and Mashup-Industries are both down for the count (though M.I. may be back again) so I'm using SoundCloud more for new sounds. However, this post is brought to you by two words:

New.
VNV.

https://soundcloud.com/vnvnation/transnational-album-preview
https://soundcloud.com/vnvnation/retaliate-from-the-album
Let's get right into it. These here are the preview stream and first single off the upcoming VNV Nation album, called "Transnational." It drops in the US Nov 19, but the earliest we're likely to see them over here is Spring, since their posted tour has them in the UK/EU through February. So yay, and boo.

The single and preview sound like much the same as we've heard from them, with strong vocals, rock- and metal-infused electronica, and intense emotional/political lyrics. What makes VNV, though, is the live experience which I've tried to describe before and mostly failed. If they do come around I'll be there and be looking for people who want to go see them with me.

https://soundcloud.com/gigamesh/talking-heads-once-in-a
It's always a risk trying to remix a beloved classic, but I think Gigamesh pulls this one off. It's his take on the Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime" (sometimes referred to as "Letting the Days Go By"). The remix keeps the surreal feel of the original, with Byrne's vocal assertions featured prominently, which is what made the original so good. It's a little more electronica, a little bit sped up, but overall a wonderful homage.

https://soundcloud.com/goldroom/goldroom-embrace
Goldroom (http://goldroom.la/) is a new-to-me producer of lush electronica. This piece is really evocative of end-of-summer to me, and features great vocal work by Ariela Jacobs (http://www.triplejunearthed.com.au/ArielaJacobs) another new name to me.

https://soundcloud.com/mashupgermany/mashup-germany-naughty
Mashup Germany continues to give me the best kind of whiplash. I start playing one of his mixes and find my head snapping around, going "he did NOT just..." Here he's mashing four main tracks, all of which I need to check out on their own. The whole thing makes a great track, so it seems a shame to pick one or two of the transitions or drops, but check out how he changes up the tunes and if you like it check out the extended mix (second link).

https://soundcloud.com/djsfrommars/djs-from-mars-alien-7
DJs from Mars. Extended mash-up set. What more do you need to know? Features some of the Mars's own mixes but mostly it's other peoples' original tracks, mash-ups, and remixes in a delicious hour-long set. Go listen; I can't possibly do it justice in a few sentences.

So I figured I'd close out with a sampling of new and old voices doing new things.

http://audioporncentral.com/2013/05/crystal-fighters-you-i-gigamesh-remix.html
In my quest to find something in the new electro-disco soundscape that really appeals to me this is a reasonable entry. Gigamesh is reworking Crystal Fighters' "You and I" (https://soundcloud.com/crystalfighters/you-and-i) which is a boppy, happy, jangly original with some fun speedy vocals. Gigamesh strips out the high jangly instrumentals and lays down some fairly energetic dance grooves.

http://www.trickysite.com/listen-to-the-full-album-now/
In case you weren't already convinced that you wanted to buy the new Tricky album, here, just stream the whole thing for free. It's new and fresh and yet it's Tricky doing what Tricky does best - he's strong and intimate, intense but not overwhelming. I love the feeling that on some of these tracks he's singing directly to me (or you, the listener) - it almost wants to be a headphones-only experience.

https://soundcloud.com/virginmagneticmaterial/nine-inch-nails-the-hand-that
There's a lot to like here. First, it's a remix built on one of my favorite NiN tracks ever. The song is brutal and lyrical at the same time. It's infused with Reznor's signature post-industrial sounds. So when Virgin Magnetic Material (https://soundcloud.com/virginmagneticmaterial) - an Israeli remixer - puts hands on it, respect has to be shown. I think the remix does that; you never forget that it's Reznor's song and voice that drives things but the remix gives it a lot more of a hard club edge. There's a bit of wub experimentation around the 6:10 mark that I think could be edited out but otherwise a very solid take on the tune.

https://soundcloud.com/sayloulou/fool-of-me-feat-chet-faker
Say Lou Lou (nee Saint Lou Lou) have a new EP out and these two tracks are the ones hitting hardest right now. The first (for which I recommend watching the video - subtext much!) is "Julian", a dark harmonic duet that fairly begs to be played out under an open summer night sky.

The second is the women collaborating with Chet Faker (http://chetfaker.com/), an Australian I've noticed once before. As with Julian, this track is also dark and lushly harmonic but with stronger instruments and urgent beats that fit more into the "dream pop" category.

According to last.fm these women are the twin daughters of Steve Kilbey of The Church. Excellent musical heritage to work from.

http://audioporncentral.com/2013/05/austra-home-kevin-saunderson-and-the-house-of-virus-detroit-darkness-remix.html
Another electro-house remix to round out this set. Austra (http://www.austramusic.com/) are going to be putting out a new album this coming month and this track - Home - will be on it. This remix is by Kevin Saunderson (http://www.kevinsaunderson.com/) a Detroit house DJ/mixer. I like this track almost despite its disco elements, as Saunderson does a lot of playing the vocals up and down, in and out, creating a fast, trippy feel to the track. I particularly like the transition around 4:00 where he drops everything down to just piano and then starts layering the warbled vocals and house sounds over that. This mix has really grown on me the more I listen.

Five things to listen to, with accompanying remixes. But first...

http://audioporncentral.com/2012/04/loo-placido-antisocial-pigs.html
It's been entirely too long since we had a straight-up mash to head-bang with. Loo and Placido oblige with a French-tinged five-way slam-banger anchored by Black Sabbath and Metallica.

http://audioporncentral.com/2012/04/scissor-sisters-only-the-horses-video-and-calvin-harris-remix.html
First of a couple Scissor Sisters appearances in this post we have the new single - Only The Horses - from their upcoming album. The base track is their standard heavy-bass male-voiced electro-pop. That's paired with a Calvin Harris remix that does an interesting job of paring down the electro into a more spare and minor-key style, but still has that damned thump-thump going. I think both could dispense with it and have a stronger track as a result. I went back and re-listened to their 2010 Night Work and although it's the same piano/synth-heavy electro-pop the earlier stuff has a cleaner and less forced feel.

http://audioporncentral.com/2012/04/ladyhawke-sunday-drive-scissor-sisters-and-gigamesh-remixes.html
In addition to their own stuff, Scissor Sisters have been remixing other peoples' stuff and doing a fair job at it. Here they turn in one of two remixes of Ladyhawke's (http://www.ladyhawkemusic.com/) "Sunday Drive". I thought I had reviewed this when it first came out earlier this month but apparently not. The original is a mix of electro and folk-rock with just a little bit of punk thrown in for good measure. Another voice I want to hear without extensive autotuning.

The Scissor Sisters remix takes out the punk bits, and smooths/stretches the rest giving it a more relaxed and less airy feel. I still want to take that damned kick-track away from them, though.

Gigamesh's version also has the kick-track, but uses it to anchor a more traditional vocal-house remix, combined with ambient electronica. As with the other remix I can't say one is definitively better than the others - all three are interesting takes on the track, which I expect we'll hear remixed more as the summer plays out.

http://audioporncentral.com/2012/04/david-lynch-noahs-ark-moby-remix.html
Last time we checked in with David Lynch, he was working with Chrysta Bell and making heart-stopping chanteuse tracks. Here he's doing his own thing - as eerie as David Lynch can be - but with a fine remix polish by Moby, whose style is unmistakable in the string accompaniments and spare samples. The pairing works extraordinarily well - two master craftsmen.

http://audioporncentral.com/2012/04/rachid-taha-bent-sahra-secousse-edit.html
Rachid Taha (http://www.rachidtaha.fr/wordpress/) is a French-African (Algerian) rai master with long years working in electronic rock and pop. Taha is often associated in the English-language world with The Clash and some of his stuff has definite punk influences, which I think I can hear in the original version of this track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pQ_D5sDYuo). The Secousse remix damps down some of that in favor of more overt North African sounds, both vocal and instrumental. This is another case where I think both the original and the remix are excellent. Secousse (http://www.facebook.com/secousseltd) is a Paris-based, funk-influenced producer with a stompin' good style that's also worth checking out.

There's been a sudden influx of good stuff into my stream, so you all get an early edition this week.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRNPT72z7Yg
Gigamesh's (http://soundcloud.com/gigamesh) Sunlight Remix of Theophilus London's "I stand Alone". This is smooth and beautiful, with Theophilus's vocals featuring over an electro-disco beat mix that is just understated enough. It's actually not that different from the original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WRuDAasz-8&ob=av2e), just less rap/hip-hop and a little more ethereal. Gigamesh has a very light hand here.

http://www.abneypark.com/I'veBeenWrongBefore-AbneyPark.mp3
Abney Park released three new tracks from their forthcoming album to their mailing list and the world. I confess I've been less enchanted by their current sounds than I was in the stuff I heard from them originally, but this one is not bad. It's kind of bouncy and has more traditional rock-n-roll drums and guitars for backing than you might expect, but Captain Robert's vocals are still front-and-center. Plus the lyrics amuse the hell out of me - give it a listen with headphones on so you can follow along.

http://viprhealthcare.typepad.com/files/3lau---all-night-long-felguk-feat.-darth-vader-vs.-lmfao-vs.-ellie-goulding-vs.-mann.mp3
Courtesy of mashuptown.com this is one of four 3LAU mixes they featured. It's built around Ellie Goulding so I'm already favorably disposed to it and I like the way 3LAU shifts from Goulding to LMFAO and back again. It's a classic A|B mix but the source material is great and the result holds up well to repeated listening.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuKZJmxpp_w&feature=player_embedded
Kap Slap put together an awesome four-way mix. Party banger mixes, of which this is definitely one, risk being too formulaic, but this avoids most of those traps. The video also looks like enormous fun. The primary components of the mix are Pumped Up Kicks' "Foster The People" and Martin Solveig's "Hello", both of which are getting a lot of use in remixes these days. Still, this one stands out and I'm going to have to check out what else Kap Slap has done that might be worth blogging.

http://www.musicstop.org/nero-promises-lyrics-with-video
I was listening to a remix that included this track - "Promises" by Nero (http://www.myspace.com/nerouk) - and decided I needed to find the original. I had sort of peripherally heard of Nero a while ago, but they were (then) known mostly for d&b, of which I'm not a fan. This track, however, is straight up vocal electronica with Alana Watson providing the sound that stopped me in mid-mash and sent me looking for the original. You can hear more of her work on the tracks at their MySpace page. She's reminding me of someone else but I can't think of who just this moment.

http://audioporncentral.com/2011/10/totally-enormous-extinct-dinosaurs-4play.html
Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs is a kid in a home-made dinosaur costume mixing on stage. This eleven-minute short film shows him on stage doing his thing and also sitting around talking about what it's like to be a live dance music producer trying to do his own thing and not be overly confined by labels or genres or other words that might limit who would listen to his music. I sympathize with him and I like his style.
