I seem to be more leaning toward conventional EDM/house these days. I've added a few new people to my Soundcloud "follow" list, which should change the composition of my stream there somewhat. I'm also trying to investigate some things that are less US/European mainstream. We'll see if that leads anywhere. Meanwhile, on with the tunes...

Afrojack is one of those new follows. This "Switch" starts off sounding like a vocal house piece but it has several interesting twists in the bass line and how the drops are arranged. I know I complain about this often, but I feel this track is too short. At just under three minutes it feels more like a preview than a fully developed piece. Maybe it's good that a song leaves me wanting more?

This came out of my exploring some more Middle Eastern sounds. Maitre Gims has popped up a couple times before (https://drwex.dreamwidth.org/tag/maitre+gims) and here he brings some strong vocals to anchor this dance track. The track comes out of an Istanbul-based collective - I know nothing about modern Turkish music and I found it interesting that they were combining French chanteur vocals with samples of English rap. Even more interesting, the base track "Mi Gna" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPjN6N8TgNI) is Armenian. I really like both the original and the remix.

"Try Again" is not exactly a legendary tune, but as a high-charting, much played hit from (dear gods I'm old) nearly 20 years ago, it's not something to be handled lightly. D’Maduro’s remix pulls in a lot of additional elements, giving the track a nearly complete rework. About all that's left from the original are some vocal samples. I think that's kind of a shame - one of the things I liked about the original was the way it layered different vocal tracks. D'Maduro makes an interesting attempt but I think it falls short.

To wrap this up, here's a double shot for you - the Futurism EP from Future House Music and what I think is its best track. "Future House" is a designation that's been popping up here and there over the past few years. It's sometimes associated with a style that draws from deep house and sometimes it's just the name of an indie label that's trying to promote its sounds.

This EP is definitely house music and it's got some deep bits. But it's also higher BPM than I'd expect and has a wider variety of electronic sounds. Give it a listen and see what you think.

For me the clear winner is Ken Takano & Victor Tellagio' "Prisoner" which is built around some retro sounds - soul vocals, horns, and a less frenetic but still very danceable beat.

All my meetings today got cancelled (madness!) so let's see if I can turn out a music entry or two. I'm still hurrying so apologies if the research isn't as deep as at other times. I have both massive amounts of excellent funk and some long sets marked but I think I'll put the other things in here and save that for another entry.

http://www.groovelectric.com/resplendent.html
Grooevelectric's "Resplendent" is a lovely prog-house hour-plus with a strong electronica influence. I ended up playing this first time through one one of my late-night work sessions and I think it's perfect for that kind of thing. It's generally faster-paced than most prog-house stuff and the lack of vocals through most of it makes it good working background for me. Of the selections here I think I like Exoplanet's "Crystal Garden" best (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqQwt8SMtI8) - here in its Mindaugas Jax remix form. I still think of this kind of music as the spiritual children of Jan Hammer, which is OK with me.

ANILAH gives us an extended interpretation of a medicine chant. In several Buddhist and Native American traditions a musical chant can be used for medicinal purposes. Some of them are mental - healing the minds of the chanters - while others are more literal prayers for healing of the bodies of people over whom the chant is performed. This particular rendition is more highly produced and has additional layered voices compared to chants I've heard before. Still a very deep and rich set of sounds.

https://soundcloud.com/awolnation/awolnation-i-am-steve-aoki-remix
Bridging back toward my more traditional sound selections, here's Steve Aoki's bouncy and energetic remis of AWOLNATION's "I Am" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLZkf6HvO2Q). The original is a low-key, vocal/piano-centric piece from which only the key vocal chorus survives in this remix.

https://soundcloud.com/sonsofmaria/sons-of-maria-angelika-vee-sweet-madness
I'm continuing to follow Angelika Vee in hopes she'll break out with something massive. In the meantime she continues to do reliably excellent work like this one. Here she's fronting for Sons of Maria on their "Sweet Madness" track. The Sons are a pretty traditional deep-house/prog-house act and as a result the track has a heavy production hand on it. Vee's vocals still shine through, but it doesn't have the raw quality of her live-with-piano tracks. Still waiting.

I knew I'd blogged about the Maitre Gims "Est-ce que tu m'aimes" a while ago, but hadn't properly tagged it. That entry has DJ Stokholma's electro-house version of the original. This time we have DJ Dark and DJ George A going at it with a cover that has a female vocalist and is much more of a techno-dance-style mix. VERY different feel from the original, which is almost a lover's lament. To make matters even more confusing, they've retitled their version "Je t'aime" which got me confused with the (in)famous Serge Gainsbourg track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rp7mamCpdcc). That one I remembered from back in the 1970s when I listened to a bit of psychedelic pop, and then ended up reading its interesting history. It's interesting diversions like these that make these music entries take a while to write.

I'm having a hard time categorizing this set of links. It's been a month since my last post (forgive me Father) so the links have rather piled up.

Two interpetations of a mash-up, which give you a sense of how song interpretations work. The first link is a pretty nice DJs from Mars mash-up with all their trademark elements - good respect for the initial tracks, good use of the vocals, and then that beat. It's using good source material and just amping up the dance elements. Then Rudeejay goes back and redoes the track, toning some elements down, mixing in a few new things. It's a kind of musical improv theater.

https://hearthis.at/rafmarchesini/take-me-to-renaissance-raf-marchesini-max-bragantini-mash-up/
I found this in a DJs from Mars set and had a heck of a time tracking it down. This is a zooming prog-house mashup that shifts gears several times along the way. I like the source tracks and the mix does a good job of steering away from trainwreck territory (which often happens with these rapid-shift mashes).

https://soundcloud.com/wearevinai/vinai-get-ready-now
I feel like I've heard "Get Ready Now" in so many forms already but somehow haven't blogged the original. It's been heavy mash-up fodder for the last couple months at least, which is not surprising considering it's got a straightforward and easy house beat and simple lyrics. It's catchy, I'll give it that.

It's closing on Valentine's day so here's something for the romantics in the audience...

https://soundcloud.com/ema-stokholma/est-ce-que-tu-maimes-ema-stokholma-remix
DJ Ema Stokholma gives us a hot electro-house remix of a nice French pop love song from mid last year (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TpyRE_juyA). Maitre Gims has a fabulous voice, though I think the track is overtuned. The remix is obviously more dance and it roughens up some of the smooth edges of the original. I've been going back and forth on which I like better - what about you?

https://soundcloud.com/fridasundemo/the-sun
Last month I found Frida Sundemo fronting someone else's track. This is her doing her own music. It's soft, orchestral slow-dance - the sort of thing I expect to hear in movie soundtracks. Not normally my thing, but I like it enough to want to check out more of her stuff.

And what would a drwex music post be without a little funk? Here, have a double shot...

https://soundcloud.com/griz/smash-the-funk-forthcoming
GRIZ posted this as a teaser for his Mad Liberation album. "Smash the Funk" is funky, groovy, and also quite modern in its loops and breakbeats. It's a bit more electro-soul than I'm used to on a funk track and that might put some people off, but I like about 4/5 of it and that's a good start for someone new to me.

https://soundcloud.com/angeloferreri/queen-another-one-bites-the-dust-angelo-ferreri-mood-funk-beat-free-download
Speaking of funk and 80% here's Angelo Ferreri's fast funk take on Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust." It's a little bit repetitive and uses less of the vocals than I'd like, but it's an interesting take on a classic.
