Still more music
Jan. 9th, 2013 01:06 pmWorking through my backlog of notable music. New sounds from long-familiar names, and sounds that get under your skin and stay there.

If you combine Trent Reznor and Luis Vasquez you get The Soft Moon - a project in combining NiN-like industrial with modern electronica and even pop. The RCRD reviewer compares this to Joy Division, but I don't think this is their "Ice Age" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGPBlsnOF5k). I haven't dug that deeply but at first glance it's not clear whose track they're remixing here.

Howard Jones (yes THAT Howard Jones) put together this gorgeous 4-track EP. He's done a brilliant job of paying homage to the original compositions and arrangements while updating the songs to match his current voice and musical style. It's a rare trip down memory lane for me - in particular I remember seeing him do "Things Can Only Get Better" live in 1985 and how sad I was that none of the women I was interested in back then wanted to see it with me.

Bat For Lashes has been known to cause me to melt in my seat. This is her latest and it's good, but comes across much more muted than things of hers I've heard in the past, which have had a ferocious vocal intensity. This one is still characteristically haunting but it didn't affect me quite so much.

Kenna (http://www.kenna.com/) turns in a stunning cover of one of my favorite U2 tunes. Kenna has been around for a couple years doing production work, some covers, and some original things I was able to find though he's new to me. There's not much to say about "Gloria" - it was hugely popular when U2 first started doing it and they've revived it on recent tours. I'm generally not a big fan of liturgical music by itself, but I've liked many modern musicians' use of the music (Gaudete anyone?)

This remix is about a year old but it just came to my attention - I swear wandering SoundCloud can be just as time-consuming as wandering tvtropes, and just as much fun. The mix is a smooth, slightly understated, slightly mysterious, instrumental piece by Frenchman Arnaud Rebotini (https://www.myspace.com/arnaudrebotini) who seems to have a nice selection of ambient-synth tracks up various places around the Web.

I've noted before that there aren't a lot of female remixers getting attention these days, at least in the US. MayaVanya (http://soundcloud.com/mayavanya) are a prolific female remix duo whose sounds I've been seeing now and then. This one is a hot, fast chop-mix of Ricki-Lee's "Burn It Down" (http://www.pradsenanayake.com/Ricki-Lee-Burn-It-Down). The remix adds a strong bass line that I think works extremely well with Lee's voice. The original is not bad (for what it is) but I think I like this remix better.
