On the occasion of Ravi Shankar's passing, I felt we should talk about music a bit. I'm something of a heretic in that I wasn't a huge Shankar fan directly, but I owe a tremendous amount of what I do like to his pioneering work. Among other things he was called the father of world music and he did a lot to get non-Western sounds into Western ears and that changed music forever. May his memory always be a blessing.

First up, a long-form item. This is a remastering of the Grey Album, one of the seminal pieces of remix work. Danger Mouse created something novel when he took a capella Jay Z (the Black Album) and laid it over instrumental samples from the Beatles (White Album). However, given the quality of samples and tools available in 2004 the result was a little rough. Now The John Stewart (http://thejohnstewart.net/) has gone back and remastered the mix, cleaning up the audio and improving the samples significantly. You can listen to the whole thing (which I find hard) on Soundcloud or follow the link to download/listen to individual tracks.

Last time I noted that Kylie Auldist really saved a track. You can find several of her original items on YouTube and I recommend it. This one is a nice bluesy number and it doesn't hurt that she's got some good brass backing her up.

Saint Motel (http://www.saintmotel.com/) are a new outfit who just released their debut album after a summer of working and touring. This is the first single off it, and the video is worth watching. The sound is bright and breezy without the sort of minor-key vocal whininess that many male-led modern groups fall prey to.

APC calls this a "shiny happy groovy" remix which is spot-on, and I would also add "slightly funky". Koletzki is a German DJ/producer who's been running an indie electronica label for a few years now (thank you Google translate). Apparently he likes to keep his hand in, too, which is an excellent thing.

I wanted to close out with something really different and excellent. I found out that SoundCloud's Dashboard lets you see things that have been favorited by people you follow and this was favorited by The Kleptones. It's The Two Mamarrachos (a word I'm told means something like 'clowns') doing a beautiful remix interpretation of a classic 1970 piece by CSNY. The music is obviously informed by Latin roots and styles but still keeps its essential heart. Really a stellar tribute piece.
