On an amusing note, it took me a while to realize that you didn't mean the equation itself was poor, but that what it signified was. I would have written it as:
$AMOUNT_OF_PAYCHECK <= $COST_OF_CAR_REPAIR
It literally took me 20 seconds to parse. Then again, I haven't slept....
I just got two month's back rent and utilities from one of my housemates, and it doesn't quite equal this week's car repair bill (though it comes close).
A front strut spring broke (like, completely, it snapped in two). Had the front struts replaced, and found that having the steering wheel straight means the car turns left, and going straight requires keeping the wheel about 10 degrees right. Dealership says steering control arm is physically bent out of shape, and it and the knuckle need to be replaced. They say it wasn't caused by the broken strut. They wonder, though, if someone hit my car while it was parked and pushed it sideways. No, my car was parked in an enclosed garage spot. Well, maybe a really big pot-hole, they suggest.
Geesh! Sympathies. I might suggest that for a very expensive repair you get a second opinion. The current repair, although expensive, is about 20% cheaper than the price the dealership quoted me for the work.
Nod. In some idealized universe I'd buy a new vehicle. However, in this universe we're still paying off Pygment's new vehicle. Also, the VW diesel models I had my eye on did not get the LEV rating I was hoping for so I'm back to trying to figure out just what I want my next car to be.
When my VW refused to crank three time in three weeks and had to be towed into the shop every time, I got rid of it. Neither of my current vehicles have any sort of microprocessor operated equipment (with the exception of the radio in my truck).
