[livejournal.com profile] taura_g is up to 66% of her goal as I write this (http://www.the3day.org/site/TR/Walk/WashingtonDCEvent2009?px=3107039&pg=personal&fr_id=1303). If you're one of my friends who helped her get this far thank you. If you did it just because I asked and you don't even know her - double thanks for being willing to help and trusting me/us. If you're thinking about it and you might be able to help with that last 1/3 that'd be awesome.

I mention the "people you don't even know" part because I just put a bit of money in the pot to help someone I don't know, but whose work I've enjoyed for years. Aerie, currently the writer of the webcomic Punch an' Pie, is in need of funds to help her move home. She's got a long explanation up on the site (http://www.punchanpie.net/cgi-bin/autokeenlite.cgi) and it's got stuff about her mom's death and other personal details. She needs some funds, so I put in a bit. I don't pay for the webcomic but I've been reading it for years. I figure if I toss in what a magazine subscription would've cost me I come out ahead on the whole thing.

So, y'know, if you feel like you've enjoyed someone's work for a while and want to support them, too, that'd be cool. Not all of us can afford it, given the state of jobs, economy, kids, and other demands. But when I can, I do, and if it works for you too then please consider it - whether it's Aerie, taura_g, or whoever moves you.

RCRD_LBL has been sending me pointers to remixes and I figured I'd collect up a few of them:

http://www.rcrdlbl.com/artists/Wolfmother/track/New_Moon_Rising_YACHT_Remix
Wolfmother (http://wolfmother.com/) is a hard act to characterize. It's something of a throwback to late-60s guitar rock but with more modern sensibilities and instruments. The remixes on this page are bouncy and energetic but without piling on too many BPM.

http://rcrdlbl.com/artists/Lauren_Flax/track/Youve_Changed_feat_Sia_Richie_Panic_and_UFO_remix
By contrast Lauren Flax is pretty straight-up dance music. High BPM, some female vocals. Has promise but I don't have time to check out more of her stuff right now.

http://rcrdlbl.com/artists/Erol_Alkan__Boys_Noize/track/Death_Suite_Bobermann_Remix
Likewise, this is a fairly ordinary dance track. It starts off strong then sort of fades to "meh" with repetitions near the end.

And now for something completely different. For a while now I've been thinking that a lot of peoples' reactions to mash-ups isn't so much a reaction to the mash-up itself as it is some set of reactions related to the mash-up and the component tracks. For which I give you this:
http://www.mashup-industries.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=218&Itemid=36
A mash-up of the new electro-rock tune "Uprising" by Muse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elElYLYG-yU) with the classic "Cover Me" from Blondie. That tune sparks a lot of memories for me. Debbie Harry was a very early crush for me. She was smokin hot (*), was an approachable punk, and was doing rap way the hell before it was fashionable for white folks. So, yeah, this mix is sultry, sexy, and very danceable in a way that the out-and-out dance mixes don't move me.

(*) In doing the research for this track I found that she was born in 1945, which made her about 40 when I was lusting after her. Bit of a surprise there.
