What are your rules for living?

(By this I mean things that don't get taught in conventional schooling. I'm not talking about the obvious like "don't walk out in the street in front of moving cars.")

There is beauty and goodness in every human being (sometimes you do have to look kind of hard for it, though).

I used to believe this, but when I got older and more cynical I stopped believing it.

I think the key is in quantity, quality and texture. Many people have just a teeny bit of beauty and goodness in them. Not everyone has a lot of beauty and goodness in them, and to say "everyone is beautiful and good" cheapens the folks who are 90% beautiful and good.

For me, the point isn't that it exists in everyone -- that makes things worse for me, they COULD be good or beautiful, but they're not, they choose (in a sense, with how they react and deal -- or not) to be bad/ugly.
